“a platform for collaboration!”
The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club. Durham, NC
The second installment of our Champions series; entitled “Homes for the Brave;” will focus on identifying community, policy, financial, & collaborative solutions to combating homelessness and the socio-economic displacement of our nation’s most vulnerable communities; particularly recently transitioned service-members, female veterans, service-disabled heroes, and children.
Homelessness and socio-economic displacement within our military community is one of our nation’s most disheartening truths. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs calculates “that about 12% of the adult homeless population are veterans; the majority of which suffer from mental illness, alcohol and/or substance abuse, or co-occurring disorders.” Approximately 9% are between the ages of 18 and 30, and 41% are service-members of the Iraq and Afghanistan generation. It has been calculated that nearly 1.4 million other veterans, are considered at risk of homelessness due to poverty, lack of support networks, and dismal living conditions in overcrowded or substandard housing.
“The goal of our “Homes for the Brave” summit is to create an intellectual environment where social, community, philanthropic, and federal organizations can explore the kinds of partnerships that will expand their capability to serve the needs and interests of our nation’s displaced. The 2-day event will not only bring national leaders in public policy, research, and academia to discuss ways to improve best practices, but will also serve as the platform through which national charities, community organizations, health centers, military leadership, and funding organizations can:
Healing with CAARE, Inc. (or CAARE) is a non-profit, grassroots, community-based health organization, that provides an array of medical, social, and housing services to at-risk community members who experience disproportionately high levels of long-term wellness, socioeconomic, and chronic health deficiencies. Offering a wide variety of services that help treat not only the medical roots of chronic diseases but also the social and human factors that contribute to these health deficits, today CAARE stands as one of the state of North Carolina’s first FREE comprehensive health care clinics for the uninsured!
For the past 30 years, the facility’s Co-Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Sharon Elliott-Bynum (pictured here with US Surgeon General Dr. Boris Lushniak during a June 2014 visit to CAARE), has dedicated her life to helping the under-served; setting a standard for service, responsibility, and unconditional support for those who are most in need. From its conception, CAARE’s primary aim has been to eliminate service barriers that prevent the socially and economically disadvantaged from gaining access to quality healthcare services. For nearly 20 years, CAARE Inc. has sought to address disparities in health services, and has created a community of collaborative support devoted to providing low income individuals with access to affordable health options; and from its conception, the organization’s primary aim has been to eliminate service barriers that prevent the socially and economically disadvantaged from gaining access to quality healthcare services. CAARE recently finished construction on a 15-bed dormitory on its Durham, NC campus to house veterans and displaced service-members; providing them with not only adequate housing but also access to the facility’s “wrap-around” approach to meeting the health, wellness, and social needs of our community’s under-served. The organization is constantly exploring partnerships based on the mutual desire to maximize resources and services that benefit target populations.
